On May 10th, 2008, in honor of Better Speech and Hearing Month, HEAR INDIANA will host its 5th Annual TALK.WALK.RUN at Fort Harrison Sate Park in Indianapolis.
HEAR INDIANA is the non-profit Indiana chapter of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. For over 30 years we have helped children with hearing loss achieve their fullest potential as independent members of society. HEAR INDIANA supports Hoosier families by providing advocacy training, online support, mentoring, an education conference, and our FREE summer camp for children with hearing loss.
Hearing loss is the most common birth defect. In the state of Indiana, a baby is diagnosed with hearing loss every 48 hours. Newborns can be fitted with hearing aids, and children as young as one may receive a cochlear implant. With today’s technology, most deaf children can learn to listen and speak. We know that if deaf babies receive appropriate early intervention by six months of age, they have an excellent chance of achieving age-appropriate language skills by the time they enter mainstream kindergarten.
